A little about John:
John Pointer, a.k.a. “Squinty Phil”, grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, got a degree in Cello Performance and Composition from UT Austin and has been a full time musician based there ever since.
He created and led the pioneering a cappella & body percussion ensemble Schrödinger’s Cat, and was the beatboxer in the Chili’s Baby Back Ribs commercials. He’s a pretty ridiculous guitarist. He played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and Roger in RENT, has commercially released 9 albums with several different groups, and the Mayor and City Council of Austin declared January 27th 2005 “John Pointer Day”. What?! Yes… evidently they do that down there.
John is an 11-time Austin Music Award Winner, world-touring indie artist, and founder of both Patronism.com and the Live Music Capital Foundation. The first is a pay-what-you-feel subscription platform to connect artists and patrons directly, for the benefit of both. The second is a nonprofit which connects major patronage directly to the venues we all know and love, so they can pay artists better and focus on selling quality, not just alcohol. It’s an easy way to put capital directly into Live Music in the Live Music Capital.
