Celebrate ICMCA’s opening concert of the 2019 season with Anoushka Shankar.
Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar is a singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes. Her dynamic and spiritual musicality has garnered several prestigious accolades including six Grammy® Award nominations. A range of recordings from Indian classical ragas to her more creatively experimental work has already produced 10 highly-acclaimed albums and a DVD film-score to the Indian silent movie epic, Shiraz (1928). In her new programme, Anoushka Shankar reflects on her journey so far; drawing on classical ragas, referencing some of the experiences she’s built along the way and experimenting with new ideas in a cross-cultural dialogue that showcases the versatility of the sitar across musical genres.
The Indian Classical Music Circle of Austin (ICMCA) is Austin’s premier organization for the promotion of Indian classical arts in the Central Texas area. Founded in 1991, ICMCA has, in its 25-year history, conducted 200+ concerts in Austin, with cumulative attendance at events exceeding 50,000 to date. We are a tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization with deep roots in Austin: we serve our community by expanding the artistic and cultural landscape of the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’.
ICMCA’s mission includes taking all Asian classical art forms deeper into the Central Texas community and enriching the cultural fabric of Austin. We constantly strive to make the Asian arts accessible to a larger audience by providing free or discounted tickets to senior citizens and students, delivering free workshops and lecture-demonstrations to under-served audiences, and partnering with the Ronald McDonald House,VSA Arts of Texas, Knowbility.org and many more charitable institutions.
ICMCA is funded and supported in part by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art. ICMCA also relies heavily on its strong membership base. With the support of our loyal patrons, we are able to bring concerts of the highest quality to Austin and to Central Texas.
Internationally known as the “Voice of Aggieland”, the Grammy Award Winning Singing Cadets are Texas A&M University’s premier men’s chorus. They are one of the oldest collegiate singing organizations in the world.
Besides touring throughout the state of Texas performing an average of 65 concerts per year, the Singing Cadets have also spread the Spirit of Aggieland around the globe. They have performed for every living president as well as other distinguished individuals and many foreign dignitaries. They have held concerts in places such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Saint Paul’s Cathedral. Austin Texas is the only city they include in their tour every year.
This event makes it possible for the Austin Texas A&M University Mothers’ Club to provide scholarships to outstanding Texas A&M students from the Austin area. Our Merit Scholarships award thousands of tuition dollars to recipients each year and our club has funded two Texas A&M Foundation Endowed scholarships; the Opportunity Award and the Southerland Aggie Leadership Award.
